AQUATIC PHYSICAL THERAPY

Aquatic therapy, or pool therapy, consists of an exercise program that is performed in the water. It is a beneficial form of therapy that is useful for a variety of medical conditions. Aquatic therapy uses the physical properties of water to assist in patient healing and exercise performance without the compression on the joints and spine that we see with traditional land based exercise.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy

  • Buoyancy promotes off-loading of joints by reducing the impact of gravity.

  • Assists in gaining ROM (Range of Motion)

  • Water resistance assists in strengthening muscle and building aerobic capacity to improve functional endurance.

  • Nerve desensitization through hydrostatic pressure helps to relieve pain.

  • Improves balance, gait mechanics, and allows early athletic rehabilitation.

Aquatic Therapy is provided by our licensed physical therapy staff in the Litehouse YMCA pool.

The pool temp is 82 deg.

It is often used in conjunction with land-based therapy. In addition to performing aquatic therapy, exercise in the pool session may include stretching in the hot tub.

Patients can access the pool by stairs or a hydraulic lift.
